Whiteley Wanderers YFC Gladiators Shine in Confident Away Performance

On 25 October 2025, the Whiteley Wanderers YFC U9 Gladiators delivered a spirited and skilful away performance on grass against a determined Gosport side. The young squad, featuring Lily (7), Izzy (7), Olivia B (7), Indi (7), Isabella (8), Bess (8), Ella (8), Olivia M (8), and Lola (8), demonstrated how strong friendships inspire better football and how persevering even when things get tough truly pays off.

First Quarter

Ella started the match in goal as the Gladiators set out in a confident Christmas-tree formation. Olivia M and Indi formed a lively attacking duo, while Izzy showed real strength at the back, growing more dominant with every challenge she made.

The passes the girls made were quick and well considered, forcing Gosport to stay in their own half, nice and far away from our goal, thank you very much. Bess came extremely close to scoring before Olivia M hit the first goal of the match straight into the net, giving us a 0-1 lead.

Lily entered the action, coming on for Olivia M, and made an immediate impression, adding a coolly taken second goal. A great start: 0-2 to the Gladiators. Meanwhile, Olivia B was fearless in defence, stepping up to stop Gosport’s number 10 with excellent determination.

Second Quarter

Ella was once again in goal while the other players showed strength with purposeful passing. Bess and Indi paired up, and the team pushed forward with intent, but Gosport hit back through their number 5 to cut the lead to 1-2.

If the Gladiators were at all worried about this, they didn’t show it. Ella stayed brave under pressure, and the defence of Lola, Izzy and Isabella showed superb teamwork with a fierce attitude. Lily then delivered an amazing cross and Indi finished confidently to restore the lead to a more comfortable 1-3.

Izzy’s challenges were determined and powerful. Indi took on players twice her size, while Olivia M was always ready to receive the ball in the opposition’s half.

Third Quarter

With Olivia M taking a turn in goal, the Gladiators stayed organised in their Christmas Tree formation. Lola knocked the ball comfortably in the opposition’s half, whilst Izzy and Bella marshalled the defensive line to keep danger away.

Olivia M made a crucial save to prevent Gosport from finding a way back into the match, while Ella and Bess worked tirelessly to regain possession and attack. Their efforts paid off when Indi, in superb goal-scoring form, found the net again to make it 1-4. The Gladiators just failed to block another shot from Gosport, making the score 2-4. Lily then came extremely close to adding another goal to the Whiteley team’s score, but it was about an inch wide.

Final Quarter

Lola moved into goal for the last quarter, backing up her defenders with quick reactions and confidence. Bella and Izzy continued to operate brilliantly as a defensive duo, while Olivia B and Olivia M supported both ends of the pitch with smart positioning, quick thinking and commitment.

The Gladiators showed care for one another, checking on teammates when they took knocks and encouraging each other throughout the match. Lily continued to tease the Gosport defence, repeatedly threatening to score and showing relentless energy.

Ella and Olivia B paired well down the right side, driving play into the attacking half and the match finished just as it had begun, with the Gladiators in control, together, and enjoying their football.

This Gladiators team has been growing stronger throughout the season, learning from mistakes and repeating good strategies. These girls always do their best and give it their all, and this weekend, showed us all how it’s done, done, done.
